Ever camped all by yourself? If you've
wondered if you have what it takes, let me assure you - you do! I loved the
solitude, the independence and serenity that mastering my own adventure brings.
Here's what I've learned - just in case you're considering your own solo trip.
¨
ALWAYS tell someone where
you're going, the route you're following and when you'll return.
¨ Stick to your route.
If you're injured, rescuers will follow that route. Changing your plan widens
their search grids and increases the time it will take them to reach you.
¨
Don't take chances. Okay, I get
that you're adventurous and enjoy adrenaline pumping risks, but know your limits.
Remember that there's no one nearby to go for help when you're all alone on the
trails.
¨
Take time to familiarize
yourself with the terrain and know which wildlife
to be on lookout for.
¨
Allow yourself extra time for every
task. Since you're operating solo, it'll take longer to prepare meals, take
down camp, hang your food, etc.
¨
Train yourself with a heavier
pack. Not only do you have to do everything, you have to carry it all too.
¨
Have a backup plan that
includes maps, compass and a GPS device.
¨
Bring a book or journal. If the
bugs are bad, or if it's raining you'll get bored lying in your tent just
gazing at the ceiling.
¨
Enjoy the solitude.
