Outdoor Life Guide to Fresh Air

We wait months for the warm weather and as soon as we peel back the parkas, smog alerts replace snowstorms. Since air quality plummets as temperatures rise, it might be a good idea to pay extra attention to the AQI (Air Quality Index) when we head outdoors. According to The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, air quality is especially important for anyone with lung and heart concerns.

And we need to keep air quality on our radar - permanently. A new NASA study says previous computer estimates of global warming underestimated future highs for the Eastern U.S. The new model predicted too many rainy days, which moderate temperatures. This means daily highs could jump by 10 degrees before the turn of the century.

Once the AQI hits 100, children, the elderly, people with severe allergies, asthma and heart concerns need to take precautions. But that doesn't mean you have to shut yourself inside. You're actually better off in the woods than in the city. To ensure you enjoy your hot weather outdoor adventures:

  • Check the AQI before heading outdoors
  • Don't stay outside for long stretches of time.
  • Avoid heavy exertion. Walk flat trails, not steep inclines.
  • Go early in the morning, not late afternoon.
  • Get yourself to a national or state parkand enjoy some fresh air.

And stay hydrated.
