Road Races

So you're interested in taking up running and you've never run before? What a great time to start, and why not run a road race while you're at it. Running is a great way to get back into shape, to improve your health and to feel great while doing it. Setting a goal to complete your first road race is the ideal way to keep you on track with your running and a great way to reward yourself at the end. Can you imagine how wonderful it will feel to cross that finish line after many months of hard work? There's nothing like it.

Road races are typically 5km, 10km, half marathon (21km) and marathon (42km). There are, of course, other distances but these are the most common. Most towns and cities have their own annual road races, which are used mainly as fundraisers for a charity. These events draw in hoards of runners of all abilities, trying to reach their personal goals, just like yourself. Road races are easy to register for and can usually be found online. Keep your eyes open for one in your area.

If this is your first race and you're new to the sport, choose a 5km or 10 km race for your first event. Some races offer ‘fun runs,' which are shorter in distance and not very competitive. Doing a fun run may be a great way to introduce yourself to the world of road races. Don't forget, there are no rules that say you have to run for the entire race. If you aren't sure you can run 5km straight, it's not a big deal. You can do it in a walk-run-walk-run style. Lots of people do it this way.

We'll be providing lots of info this week on getting ready for road races, whether you're a newbie or a veteran. Be sure to check back often and get running!
