If
you need to get away from the busy city of Cancun, take the ferry over to Isla Mujeres,
which is a gem and only a short ferry ride away. We spent two days there and I
wish we could have stayed longer. The tiny island is only 5 miles long and very
narrow, but there's lots to see and experience.
During
my vacation, my partner and I rented bicycles one day and spent the entire day
cycling around the island. Luckily our bikes were of far better quality than
the ones we rented on Cozumel Island. We took our time
exploring the coast on foot and on the bikes, searching for giant conch shells
and admiring the mangroves surrounding the lagoon. The most amazing thing was
the rugged coastline, which consisted of huge cliffs and interesting rock
formations.
Golf
carts and motorized scooters were available for hire, but the island was so
small that we figured cycling would be the way to go. Plus, I find I see more
on a bike because I'm going at a speed I control.
While
one part of the island was rugged and wild, we were amazed at another part of
the small island that was so much calmer, with small waves and white sandy
beaches. Playing in the waves and cooling off in the ocean was a perfect way to
end off the day.
Getting to Isla Mujeres
Catch
a ferry from the Cancun pier or from Puerto
Juarez, which is cheaper. The ferry ride only takes 30 minutes and leaves every
hour.
